Suspension Railway

8/13

🚟 is a suspension railway: a train that hangs under an overhead rail, with its wheels running on top of the beam and the carriage dangling beneath. People send it for a ride on one, mostly in Germany or Japan, or simply as another train or sightseeing emoji. It is not a cable car: this one rides a solid rail, not a rope.

EmojiSince 2015

What 🚟 means

The wheels ride on top of a beam; the carriage hangs below them.

On an ordinary train the track is under the wheels. On a suspension railway the track is a steel beam held up by pillars, the wheels run along the top of it, and the passenger car hangs from them like a bag from a hook. It feels like a cable car, but it steers and brakes like a train, because the rail is rigid.

The famous one is the Schwebebahn in Wuppertal, Germany. It opened in 1901 and still runs every day, mostly above the river Wupper, carrying commuters and schoolchildren rather than tourists only. Japan has two suspended monorails in daily service, the Shonan Monorail near Kamakura and the Chiba Urban Monorail east of Tokyo, which is why Japanese readers often think of a hanging monorail first.

Unicode files 🚟 with the cable cars ( ) under air transport, because it travels overhead. The difference is what it hangs from: 🚟 hangs from a rail, the other two from cables.

What does 🚟 mean when someone sends it?

Usually a literal train ride, a sightseeing trip or just “train”.

Next to a photo or a city name, it marks a ride on a hanging train, a bucket-list trip to Wuppertal or a day out in Kamakura. Many senders, though, pick it from the transport row without caring about the engineering, so in a message about getting somewhere it simply means a train or the commute.

It carries no slang meaning and no hidden tone. Its only quirk is rarity: because few people recognise it, choosing it over reads as a deliberate, slightly nerdy pick.

Neutral and literal, a transport emoji with nerdy charm; unusual enough that people notice you chose it.

It is not a gondola or ski lift: it rides a rail, so cable transport gets or .

Worth knowing

  • In 1950 a young circus elephant named Tuffi was taken for a publicity ride on the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, panicked, and jumped out into the river Wupper. She survived with scrapes and became the city's mascot.
  • The Wuppertal Schwebebahn has run since 1901, making it the oldest electric hanging railway still carrying passengers.

Questions people ask

3

Is 🚟 the least-used emoji?

Not officially. A Reddit meme in 2017–2018 crowned it the least-used emoji, but that was a joke, not a measurement; several emoji are used less.

Is a suspension railway a monorail?

It can be. “Suspended” says the car hangs below the track; “monorail” says the track is a single beam. The Japanese lines are both; Wuppertal's single rail usually counts too.

Why is 🚟 listed under air transport?

Because it travels overhead. Unicode groups it with the cable cars and rather than with ground trains, even though it runs on a rail.
