Tangut Component-233

233/768

𘣨 is a Tangut component: a structural piece used to describe or index a larger ideograph, not a word with its own reading. Its role depends on the analysis that uses it, and “233” is a modern inventory label. Tangut writing was developed for the Western Xia state and its Buddhist canon; this component belongs to the scholarly study of that script.

What 𘣨 means

It is a structural part, not a word with its own reading. Tangut component indexes use such pieces to describe, analyze, or look up larger ideographs. A Tangut radical is a component used to group entries in one modern dictionary; dictionaries use different sets. In an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), components show how a larger ideograph is assembled. The number 233 is an inventory label, not a reading or translation.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It served state-building and a Buddhist canon project. Under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia (Xixia), Tangut writing was established in 1036 as part of state-building. A major goal was a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon and a distinct identity alongside Song China. The script drew on Chinese writing principles without deriving from Chinese; Khitan scripts were another nearby precedent. Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist, Confucian, military, and literary works; a Khara-Khoto manuscript fragment probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut-period dictionaries did not sort entries by radicals, so modern component indexes are a later lookup system.

How should I read a Tangut component?

Read its role in the larger ideograph or description. That role depends on the analysis: some components act as radicals in modern dictionaries, while a graphic element may also be used phonetically. A component’s shape alone is not a fixed word; its place in the larger Tangut character or its description supplies the needed reading context.

This is specialist Tangut-script material, used in component analysis and historical-text indexing.
