What 𘤤 means

It is a structural index component, not a word. In Tangut dictionaries, components help index characters and describe how they are built; “293” is the catalog label, not a translation.

Where does Tangut writing come from?

It was created in 1036 for Western Xia’s government and Buddhist translation. The Tangut script also marked a distinct identity alongside Song China. It drew visual and character-building ideas from Chinese writing, while Western Xia rulers followed earlier Khitan efforts to create scripts for their own states. A Tangut manuscript from Khara-khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.

Tangut books included translations from Chinese and Tibetan, alongside Confucian, military, and literary works.

If it appears as a blank box, the font cannot render this glyph; the encoded character remains 𘤤.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘤤 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
