Tangut Component 304

304/768

𘤯 is a Tangut component used to analyze character structure, not a word read on its own. Scholars use such parts to index the script; their component systems differ. The medieval script drew on Khitan and Chinese writing.

What 𘤯 means

It has no standalone reading or translation. “Tangut radical” is a search phrase; component is more precise because scholars use different systems.

Created in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao, the Tangut (Xixia) script helped build the state and mark its difference from Song China; it may also have supported Buddhist scripture collections. Khitan scripts influenced its design; Chinese writing supplied visual models and ways to combine parts. Tangut texts include translated Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military works, and literature. A handwritten Khara-Khoto manuscript held by the British Library dates to the 12th or early 13th century.
