Tangut component 368

368/768

𘥯 is a numbered component used to analyze and index larger Tangut characters, not a standalone Tangut word with a fixed meaning. In the documented character 𘈺, it sits on the left. The number belongs to a modern scholarly component system, not an ancient dictionary entry.

What 𘥯 means

𘥯 is a Tangut component: a reusable piece that scholars identify inside complete characters. Tangut ideographs—written characters—are sorted and analyzed by their parts; a component’s role depends on the whole character, so 𘥯 has no single standalone reading or translation.

Tangut writing was created by imperial decree during the Western Xia era to record the Tangut language. The numbered component inventory came later as a scholarly index assembled from dictionaries and other publications. A 2014 Unicode proposal reported no known examples of that inventory in original Tangut sources. A 2024 study of Homonyms, a woodblock-printed reference book, documented a historical component inventory. The number 368 belongs to that later analytical system.

Where does 𘥯 occur?

In the Tangut character 𘈺, on the left. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is compact notation showing a character’s parts. Its record for 𘈺 starts with 𘥯 in a left-right arrangement, documenting a structural link rather than a visual resemblance.

Display is a font issue. Older pre-Unicode Tangut fonts mapped glyphs onto Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) code points, and their mappings were not compatible; a box or wrong-looking shape may mean the font lacks the glyph or uses an old mapping. Inspect the underlying text character before judging the display.

Specialist terminology used for Tangut character analysis, dictionary indexing, and typesetting.

Do not treat 368 as a Tangut word or translation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘥯 show as a box?

Usually it is a font-coverage or old-mapping issue. Tangut components need a font with these glyphs; older pre-Unicode fonts also used incompatible CJK mappings, so a box does not mean the text character changed.
