Tangut Component 367

367/768

𘥮 is a Tangut component, a written part used to analyze larger Tangut characters; it is not a word to translate on its own. The Tangut script wrote the Tangut language in Xixia state documents and translations. If the glyph appears as a box, your font may lack Tangut coverage.

Text symbol

What 𘥮 means

It identifies a part used to analyze Tangut characters.

In Tangut dictionaries, 𘥮 can serve as an indexing radical: a label that groups complete characters by a shared written part. It describes structure, not a Tangut word with its own translation.

The Tangut script took shape in the Xixia state in the 11th century. The earliest transmitted Tangut document identified is dated 1072; later records include official, secular, and Buddhist texts.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave Xixia a writing system for state and cultural life.

By the 12th century, Xixia rulers used Tangut officially and ordered Buddhist and Chinese works translated into it. The script carried state communication and religious and secular writing.

Tangut writing continued after the Mongol conquest of Xixia in 1227; an inscription in Baoding was erected in 1502. These later uses belong to the script's history, not to a separate word meaning for this component.

Why is 𘥮 missing or hard to type?

A Tangut font and a compatible input method solve different problems.

If 𘥮 appears as a box, the active font likely lacks Tangut coverage; the encoded text may still be intact. The input method enters the character, while the font supplies its visible drawing.

Unicode's Tangut components also appear in Ideographic Description Sequences, compact notations that show how complete characters are built.

This is specialist script data; using it signals work with Tangut cataloguing, encoding, or typography.

Treat it as an indexing component, not a word to translate.

Can 𘥮 be used as a Tangut radical?

Yes. Some Tangut catalogues use it as an indexing radical to group full characters by a shared part. Dictionaries can use different component systems, so their groupings may differ.

Why does 𘥮 show as a box?

The active font likely lacks Tangut coverage. The encoded character is still present; a font with Tangut glyphs can draw it.
