Tangut Component 372

372/768

𘥳 is Tangut component 372, a structural part scholars use to index and describe Tangut characters, not a standalone word. In an Ideographic Description Sequence, it can help show how a character is built. Its number identifies an inventory entry, not a pronunciation or translation, and the glyph needs a Tangut-capable font.

What 𘥳 means

No. It is a structural component used in Tangut scholarship.

Tangut components help scholars index, describe, and analyze Tangut characters. An Ideographic Description Sequence is a notation that spells out a character's parts; in one, 𘥳 can mark a part of a Tangut character. By itself, it gives no Tangut word to translate or pronounce.

The number 372 is an inventory label, not a dictionary gloss. Tangut dictionaries and researchers use different component and radical lists, so the number has no universal meaning.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It supported state administration and Buddhist translation into Tangut.

The script was created around 1036 as an official system for state business and translating Buddhist texts into Tangut.

Its use extended beyond administration: a manuscript from the Khara-khoto site, dated to the 12th or early 13th century, preserves a Tangut translation of a Chinese text. Surviving texts also include Buddhist, Confucian, military, encyclopedic, and literary works, alongside translations from Tibetan. Tangut writing drew on Chinese principles and neighboring Khitan script traditions, but was not derived from Chinese.

Scholarly and technical: using 𘥳 signals structural analysis of Tangut writing, not a conversational word.

Do not treat 372 as a Tangut word or meaning.

Why does 𘥳 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
