Tangut Component-398

398/768

𘦍 names one structural piece inside a larger Tangut character; standing alone, it is not a complete written word. Tangut dictionaries and script studies use components like this to describe and compare the parts that form complete characters.

What 𘦍 means

The surrounding Tangut character carries the reading.

A Tangut component is an analytical piece used to index, describe, and compare complete Tangut characters. On its own, 𘦍 names that structural unit; it does not give the reader a complete word to read.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It gave the Western Xia state a way to write Tangut.

Around 1036, the Tangut script took shape during the reign of Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao, to write Tangut, the language of his state. Its forms drew visual inspiration from Chinese writing, and earlier Khitan scripts offered a regional precedent. Tangut appeared in official records, books, Buddhist scriptures, inscriptions, and private texts. It remained in use after Western Xia fell, into the Yuan and Ming periods, before becoming obsolete.

When Tangut components were proposed for Unicode in September 2014, no example of this exact part had yet been identified in an original Tangut text. A woodblock edition, printed from carved wooden blocks, of Tangut Homonyms, a reference work grouping characters by sound, was sold at auction in November 2014. Photographs examined in 2017 show 𘦍 to the left of sample character 𘋁.
