Tangut Component 397

397/768

𘦌 is a Tangut script component, not a standalone word with its own translation. It helps scholars index and describe complete Tangut characters; within one, a component may suggest meaning or sound. “Component 397” is a modern inventory label, not an ancient name.

What 𘦌 means

No; it is a Tangut component, not a standalone word.

A Tangut component helps index and describe a complete Tangut character. “Component 397” is a modern inventory label, not an old Tangut name.

Its job depends on the full character: one component may suggest meaning, another may suggest sound, and this shape has no fixed meaning on its own. Translate the complete character in context.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It was made for the Tangut state and its writing needs.

The Tangut script was created by imperial order in 1036 for government and state-building. Writers used it for Buddhist, Confucian, military, and literary works; translating a complete collection of Buddhist scriptures into Tangut was a major project. Its use also supported a distinct state identity alongside the Song dynasty.

Tangut forms drew visually and structurally on Chinese writing, and the script followed the regional precedent of Khitan state scripts, while remaining distinct. A manuscript found at Khara-Khoto probably dates from the 12th or early 13th century; the latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502. These dates belong to Tangut texts, not a known first appearance of component 397.

How should I use 𘦌?

Use it when identifying a Tangut component or analyzing a complete character.

For example, 𘊹 is a complete Tangut character with 𘦌 on its left. That is a structural connection, not evidence that the two signs share a translation or reading.

Its component number is an inventory label, not a word to type. For exact input, enter hexadecimal value U1898C in a Unicode-aware input tool; the keystrokes depend on the app.

Used alone, 𘦌 signals Tangut writing or Unicode character analysis rather than ordinary prose.

Do not assign it a word translation without identifying the complete Tangut character.
