Tangut Component 414

𘦝 is a structural part used to describe Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. Its role depends on the whole character around it. A square in its place usually means the font cannot display it.

What 𘦝 means

It is a structural part, not a Tangut word with its own translation. Tangut writing was created around 1036 for the Western Xia kingdom; surviving texts include official, private, and religious writing. Components like 𘦝 help describe the structure of complete Tangut characters.

A table in a Tangut wordbook places 𘦝 to the left of 𘋼, whose whole-character gloss is “will.” That gloss belongs to 𘋼, not to 𘦝; in another character, a component can contribute sound, meaning, or structure, depending on its host.

A woodblock Tangut wordbook containing this form surfaced at auction in November 2014. Photographs examined in November 2017 mapped 𘦝 as a left-side component. These dates track its modern documentation, not its origin.

Why was 𘦝 made?

It marks a structural position inside larger Tangut characters. Some Tangut components are shortened forms of other characters; others carry sound or meaning, or mark structure. Their role depends on the whole character. Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS) record component positions; they describe structure rather than automatically composing a character.

Dictionaries from the Western Xia period did not organize entries by radicals. Modern dictionaries use different component systems to help readers find Tangut characters. The component number is a modern index label, not an ancient reading or gloss.

How do I type 𘦝?

Enter U+1899D in a Unicode-aware character picker. For code, use HTML 𘦝 or a JavaScript string escape \u{1899D}.

Technical and scholarly; alone, it reads as a component sample rather than ordinary text.

Alone in a message, it may look like an unsupported glyph rather than a word.

3

Why does 𘦝 show as a square?

A square or blank means the current font or app cannot display Tangut; it does not change the character.

Can typing components create a Tangut character?

No. Components typed next to each other remain separate characters. IDS notation describes an arrangement; it does not draw a new ideograph.

Is 𘦝 a Chinese radical?

No. It belongs to Tangut's component system; being a structural part does not make it a radical used to index Han characters.
