tangut component-496

Tangut Component 496

496/768

𘧯 is a Tangut component: scholars use it to index and describe larger Tangut characters, but it is not a standalone word with a fixed translation. Tangut writing was disseminated under Western Xia rule in 1036 for state-building and Buddhist texts; this component's role today is technical. If it appears as a box, the selected font lacks its glyph.

What 𘧯 means

It is a structural part, not a standalone Tangut word.

The Unicode standard treats Tangut components as structural elements for indexing, describing, and analyzing larger characters, also called ideographs. Component 496 is an inventory label, not a pronunciation or dictionary translation.

In 1036, Tangut writing was disseminated under Western Xia rule for state-building and work on a Tangut edition of the Buddhist Canon, the main collection of Buddhist scriptures. Tangut books also preserve translated Confucian, military, and literary works. The script drew visual and structural ideas from Chinese writing and followed neighboring Khitan writing systems in building a writing system of its own; it remained distinct.

Why doesn't 𘧯 have a fixed translation?

A component can help explain a character without being a word.

Different Tangut dictionaries and scholars used different component sets. By the mid-12th century, the dictionary Sea of Characters linked components to larger characters in ways that could contribute meaning or sound. Those analyses explain how a character was built; they do not give every component its own fixed word meaning.

How can I type or display 𘧯?

Use Unicode hexadecimal input; the font controls whether it appears.

In an input method that accepts Unicode hexadecimal codes, enter 189EF. The exact keystrokes depend on your operating system and input method.

As of 2026, public font tests show varying Tangut coverage. If 𘧯 appears as a square or empty box, the selected font lacks its glyph; the character itself has not changed.

Specialist notation for analyzing Tangut writing, not an everyday standalone word.

The “496” is an inventory label, not a translation.

Your selected font lacks the glyph. A fallback square is a display issue; the character's identity is unchanged.
