Tangut Component 495

495/768

𘧮 is component 495 of the Tangut (Xixia) script: a structural part used to describe and index larger characters, not a whole word to translate. Different dictionaries use different component systems, so its radical connection here belongs to one particular index.

Text symbol

What 𘧮 means

It is a structural part for indexing and describing Tangut characters.

Scholars use Tangut components to group characters in dictionaries and analyze how they are built. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is a short written formula showing a character’s parts and layout; a component can be one piece of it. Read 𘧮 in this structural role, not as a complete Tangut word.

When did the Tangut script begin?

It was commissioned in 1036 by Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao.

Western Xia was a Tangut state in northwestern China. The script supported state-building and a distinct Tangut identity; its design drew on Chinese writing and followed neighboring Khitan script-making, yet remained its own system. It was used for Buddhist scriptures, translations of Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military works, and literature.

A Tangut text fragment found among the ruins of Khara-khoto, in present-day Inner Mongolia, is undated but probably from the 12th or early 13th century.

Specialist and reference-oriented: it points to Tangut character structure or a dictionary’s filing system.

Do not translate the component alone as a complete Tangut word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘧮 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
