What 𘧻 means
It is a lookup component, not a complete Tangut word. The numbered component 𘧻 helps describe and index complete Tangut characters; its assignment is structural, not a sign with its own meaning.
Western Xia established the Tangut script in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao as part of a project to create a Tangut Buddhist canon and express a distinct political and cultural identity alongside Song China. The design followed the earlier Khitan script and drew on Chinese writing principles. Tangut is a separate writing system.
How do Tangut components work in dictionaries?
They help organize complete Tangut characters. Many characters combine two or three components. Dictionaries can group them by component and stroke order; scholars can also describe a character's layout with an ideographic description sequence, a compact recipe showing how its parts fit together.
Manuscripts preserved at Khara-Khoto, an archaeological site with Tangut texts, include Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics translated into Tangut, encyclopedias, military works, literature, and medical and everyday manuals. This range shows the script serving a broad written culture beyond its state-building origins.
