tangut component-520

Tangut Component 520

520/768

𘨇 is a Tangut writing component, not a word with a fixed translation on its own. It belongs to the system used to index and describe larger Tangut characters, and can appear in IDS notation showing how a character is built. Enter it with Unicode input or a Tangut-aware input method; display depends on a font with Tangut coverage.

What 𘨇 means

It is a structural component, not a translated word. In Tangut writing, components help dictionaries index characters and scholars describe or analyze their structure. This component can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), a notation that shows how a larger character is assembled. A component may contribute meaning or sound differently across larger characters, so 𘨇 has no reliable standalone gloss.

The Tangut script was created and introduced around 1036–1037 for the Tangut language of Western Xia. Schools and official documents used it, while Buddhist translations, legal texts, and printed books gave it a wider public life. The script drew on older Chinese and Khitan writing systems but developed its own component inventory. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia ended; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.

Unicode uses 520 as a catalog label for a component drawn from modern Tangut dictionaries and scholarship, not as an old Tangut name. The 2019 edition of Clauson's Skeleton Tangut dictionary lists 𘨇 among the components used to order entries. Modern dictionaries do not all use the same component system, so 520 identifies this entry in a catalog rather than a universal Tangut part number.

Specialist and archival; it fits Tangut scholarship, dictionary work, Unicode descriptions, or font testing.

Do not translate it by itself; locate the Tangut character or description sequence around it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘨇 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
