What 𘨞 means
It is a reusable part of full Tangut characters.
The host character supplies the reading; “543” is a catalog label, not an ancient name.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served state-building and Buddhist writing.
The Tangut (Xixia) script spread in 1036 under emperor Li Yuanhao to distinguish Tangut writing from Song China. A major religious aim was a Tangut Buddhist Canon (a collection of scriptures). Surviving texts include Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese works: Confucian classics, military treatises, encyclopedias, and literature. An undated Khara-Khoto manuscript, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, shows use beyond state projects.
