What does this Tangut component do?
It is a component used to analyze full Tangut characters. Dictionaries and researchers use Tangut components to index and describe ideographs. In an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), symbols show how components are arranged, so placement gives a part its role.
A 1985 study found that Tangut graphic elements could carry different sound or meaning roles in different characters. That is why 𘫩 has no dependable one-word gloss by itself.
Under Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing was created in 1036 to build the Western Xia state's administration and distinct identity from neighboring Song China. It served a Buddhist canon (a collection of Buddhist scriptures), Chinese translations, and secular works. A woodblock list of Tangut components surfaced at a Beijing auction in 2014. A 2018 Unicode proposal matches 𘫩 to an entry shown inside 𘟠, a full Tangut ideograph in a historical text about homonyms (words with the same sound but different meanings).
Technical and archival: it belongs in Tangut-script analysis, not casual conversation.
A font without Tangut coverage may show a square; the encoded character is still 𘫩.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘫩 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
