What 𗄙 means
It represents a Tangut syllable by sound, not a word’s definition.
Scholars propose different reconstructions of its reading. These are scholarly readings of sound, not translations; the surrounding Tangut text or a translation identifies the intended word.
Is 𗄙 Chinese or Tangut?
It is Tangut; Chinese-inspired design does not make it Chinese.
The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of the Western Xia kingdom, to support the state; making Buddhist scripture available in Tangut was a major aim. Its design drew on Chinese character principles and an earlier Khitan script, while remaining a distinct writing system.
Later Tangut books carried Buddhist translations from Chinese and Tibetan, alongside secular Chinese works. A Tangut manuscript found at Khara-Khoto, an archaeological site with Tangut finds, dates to the 12th or early 13th century, showing the script in continued use.
Specialist and historical; its reading depends on scholarly reconstruction and surrounding text.
Chinese-inspired form does not make it Chinese; identify the script as Tangut.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗄙 show as a box?
It is a font-support issue. A font without Tangut coverage may show a box; fonts with coverage can draw the character differently because Unicode does not prescribe one exact shape.
