What 𗌄 means
Tangut dictionaries gloss it with Chinese 迴: turn, circle, or return.
A specialist Tangut dictionary gives its reconstructed reading in the transcription khia; that spelling represents a scholarly reconstruction of the sound, not a translation.
Treat the three English glosses as a range. The surrounding Tangut sentence helps determine which sense fits.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served a state and a distinct written culture. The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036 under Li Yuanhao of Western Xia (Xixia) during state-building. Its aims included a native Buddhist canon, or core collection of sacred texts, and a distinct cultural identity from Song-dynasty China. That date belongs to the script, not to the first surviving example of 𗌄.
The script drew on earlier Khitan imperial writing and Chinese character-building principles, while remaining its own system rather than a set of Chinese copies.
Tangut writing appears in Buddhist and secular translations, legal and economic records, and literature. A surviving manuscript associated with Khara-Khoto is placed around the 12th century. Stone pillars inscribed with Buddhist dharanis, or short sacred formulas, and dated 1502 show Tangut writing after the Western Xia period.
Historical and lexical; specialists may use reconstructed readings, while newcomers need the gloss and sentence.
Use 迴 as a gloss, not a stand-in for 𗌄.

Questions people ask
2Is 𗌄 a Chinese character?
No. It is Tangut. Chinese 迴 is the dictionary gloss for it, not another form of 𗌄.
Why does 𗌄 appear as a box?
The active font has no Tangut glyph coverage. A box is fallback rendering; it does not change the character or its meaning.
