How did Tangut writing begin?
The Western Xia court created Tangut writing around 1036.
Western Xia was a medieval state in what is now northwestern China. Tangut writing formed part of state-building and provided a way to prepare Buddhist scripture in the Tangut language. The Khitan had created their own scripts about a century earlier; Tangut took visual and structural inspiration from Chinese writing but was not derived from it.
After Western Xia fell, Tangut continued to be used through the Yuan and Ming dynasties and had become obsolete by the end of the Ming.
