Tangut Ideograph 17461

𗑡 is a Tangut character whose dictionary gloss is “to lose.” Tangut was the writing system of the medieval Western Xia (Xixia) state, so a lone 𗑡 is best read as a historical-text reference, study example, or font test. Its visual structure draws on Chinese design principles but represents another language.

What 𗑡 means

It is glossed in a Tangut dictionary as “to lose.” The dictionary meaning identifies the word, not what a sender intends by a lone character.

In a Tangut passage, use the surrounding text to understand how the word functions. Sent alone, 𗑡 is best treated as a historical-script reference or a display or input test.

Why does Tangut look Chinese?

It borrows Chinese design principles but writes Tangut. In 1036, Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao commissioned the script as part of a state-building project. Its aims included producing a Tangut Buddhist canon and establishing a written identity distinct from Song China. It followed neighboring Khitan states in adopting a state script, while using Chinese principles for composing characters.

A Tangut manuscript leaf from Khara-khoto, a ruined city, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. The Western Xia state fell in 1227, but Tangut Buddhist materials continued into the Yuan period; recorded use of the script extends through 1502. Its settings included state and religious books and later preservation and study. 𗑡 remains a Tangut character, not a Chinese one.

Historical and specialist rather than conversational; used alone, it suggests interest in Tangut texts, research, or typography.

Without Tangut training, a reader is unlikely to get “to lose” from a lone 𗑡.
