What 𗔟 means
It names a kind of word, not a particular family.
A Tangut surname character is a useful plain-language description: Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists 𗔟 as entry 4701, and its English index glosses it as “a surname.” That is a lexical category, not the name of one person or lineage.
Why was Tangut script created?
It gave the Western Xia state a way to write Tangut.
Developed in 1036, the script served the state’s official and cultural needs. It drew on Chinese character-building principles to represent a different language, so its shapes do not imply Chinese readings.
How did Tangut writing continue after Western Xia?
Buddhist printing kept Tangut in use after the state fell.
Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut texts continued to be printed for Buddhist use under the Yuan. The latest known Tangut document is a stone inscription from 1502. These dates describe the script’s history, not a changed meaning for 𗔟.
Historical and linguistic; explain its Tangut gloss for readers unfamiliar with the script.
A bare 𗔟 does not tell the recipient which family is meant.
