Tangut Tone Character

1493/6136

In historical Tangut sound guides, 𗗔 marks the named “level” tone class. Its “flat” gloss belongs to a technical system, not a general description; scholarly sources also transcribe its reconstructed reading differently.

What 𗗔 means

It labels a Tangut sound category called “level” or “flat.”

The word translated “flat” names a category in Tangut sound analysis; it does not guarantee that the spoken pitch stayed even. In the primary two-category terminology, 𗗔 pairs with 𗨁, the “upper” category. The labels echo Chinese 平 (“level”) and 上 (“upper”), but that does not prove the spoken pitch matched Chinese tones.

The Sea of Writing, a Tangut dictionary organized by rhyme, uses 𗗔𗙏 for “level tone.” In a fanqie note—a traditional sound guide that identifies a syllable’s beginning and ending sounds—𗗔𘘥 means roughly “say [it] in the level tone.” Here 𘘥 means “say”; it does not spell the syllable.

Why does 𗗔 appear in Tangut books?

It labels tone within Tangut’s written sound-analysis tradition.

Tangut writing began as a purpose-built script in 1036 under the orders of Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao. It helped support a Tangut Buddhist Canon, a core collection of Buddhist scriptures, and a distinct state identity from the neighboring Song dynasty in China. The script drew on Chinese forms and character-building principles but did not descend from Chinese writing.

The Western Xia state fell in 1227, but Tangut script remained in use into 1502. An undated manuscript found at Khara-khoto probably comes from the 12th or early 13th century. Dictionaries, Buddhist texts, translations, law codes, and literature all formed part of the wider written tradition.

Historical and scholarly: a tone-category label in Tangut phonological writing.

“Flat” is a historical category name here; it does not, by itself, describe an even pitch.
