What 𗗮 means
Its reconstructed reading records sound, not the word’s meaning.
Tangut scholarship writes this reading as ljwu¹, a technical notation; a Tangut text or dictionary gives the word’s meaning.
Western Xia used Tangut for government and Buddhist writing. Drawing on Chinese and Khitan traditions, it remained a separate script and marked the state’s identity beside Song China. Use continued into the Yuan era in Buddhist translations, Chinese classics, military works, literature, and secular moral texts. The script was promulgated around 1036; its earliest known dated survivor may be from 1070/1071.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗗮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
