What 𗗯 means
Its exact Tangut word is disputed: glosses say “dog” or “yak.”
One Unicode working paper maps U175EF to a Tangut word translated “dog”; another reference assigns “yak.” These are competing readings of a historical word, not evidence that its meaning changed in modern use.
The script served Western Xia state records, Buddhist works, and translations of Chinese texts. Its design drew on Chinese writing and earlier scripts used by the Khitan, a people with their own states and writing systems. A font needs Tangut support to display 𗗯; its appearance varies or may be missing.
A reference character from the historical Tangut writing system.
Its Unicode name is an identifier, not a translation.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗗯 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
