What 𗗷 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses 𗗷 as “noise.” The gloss gives a word’s meaning; it is not a cue to imitate a sound.
Tangut script was created by imperial decree around 1036 for the Western Xia state’s official and cultural writing, including Buddhist works and translations from Chinese. Tangut writing continued after the state fell.
Why does 𗗷 look like Chinese writing?
Its structure follows the model of Chinese characters; the character itself is Tangut.
Tangut, an extinct Sino-Tibetan language, was written in a script modeled on the structure of Chinese characters. That explains the visual resemblance: 𗗷 is a Tangut character, not a Chinese one.
A font needs Tangut coverage to draw this character. Without it, you may see a missing-glyph box even though the text itself is unchanged.
Historical and specialist: read “noise” as the character’s dictionary meaning.
The gloss names a Tangut word; it does not cue a noise.

Questions people ask
1Why do I see a box instead of 𗗷?
Your font may lack Tangut coverage. The box means that font cannot draw the character; it does not mean the text itself changed.
