What 𗘱 means
A Tangut text supplies its reading; the code-point label does not translate it. Tangut was the writing system for the Tangut language, used by the Western Xia state. In Sea of Writing, a Tangut rhyme index that groups entries by sound, this graph is catalogued as 11.231; Li Fanwen’s Tangut character index assigns it number 223. These entries help locate the graph, but do not translate it outside a text.
Where did Tangut writing belong?
Western Xia sponsored Tangut writing for state business and culture. The court sponsored its creation in 1036–1037 for official records and cultural work in the Tangut language. The earliest transmitted example is an official document dated 1072.
Tangut books included translations from Chinese and Tibetan, among them Buddhist works. Writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; an inscription dated 1502 is later evidence of use. Tangut writing adapted the Chinese-character tradition. Neighboring Khitan and Jurchen states also used their own scripts.
Historical and specialist: its established setting is Tangut writing and study, not everyday conversation.
Do not infer a Chinese reading from its structure.

Questions people ask
2Why does 𗘱 appear as a box?
A box or blank usually means the font displaying the text lacks Tangut glyphs. A Tangut-capable font can show the character’s shape.
Is 𗘱 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate script used for the Tangut language under Western Xia. Tangut writing drew on Chinese-character traditions, but that does not give this graph a Chinese reading.
