Unicode's source record connects 𗘸 to entry 0202 in Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary, where khjã¹ is listed as a reconstructed reading.
When and why did Tangut writing emerge?
Western Xia used it for official and cultural work.
Tangut writing emerged around 1036 for official and cultural work in Western Xia. The surviving corpus includes Buddhist translations. After the 13th-century Mongol conquest, it left everyday use; the Chinese–Tangut glossary Pearl in the Palm later helped scholars study it. Chinese-character structure influenced the script, but 𗘸 itself is Tangut, not Chinese or Khitan.
It may appear as a missing-glyph box when the font lacks Tangut coverage.

1Why does 𗘸 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
