What 𗙠 means
Li Fanwen’s dictionary glosses it as “swallow.”
The English word can name a bird or the act of swallowing, so that brief gloss does not settle a passage’s sense.
An index pairs it with reconstructed reading rjijr: a scholarly pronunciation guide, not a translation.
Is 𗙠 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to Tangut, a distinct script.
Ordered in 1036, it served state correspondence and a planned Buddhist canon, while marking Western Xia as distinct from Song China. Its design drew inspiration from Chinese writing; its creation followed the example of neighboring Khitan scripts.
Tangut texts include official records, sutras, translated classics, military works and literature. Buddhist books continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, into the Yuan period.
