What 𗜝 means
“Red wood.” Scholars reconstruct its Tangut reading as gjij.
The Tangut-led state of Western Xia began writing in 1036 under emperor Li Yuanhao, for government, Buddhist translation, and distinction from Song China. Its designs drew on Chinese writing and may reflect an older script of the Khitan people.
A Khara-Khoto manuscript probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. After the Mongol conquest in the 13th century, the Tangut language left daily use; scholarship preserved its script.
