tangut ideograph-177b4

Tangut character 177B4

𗞴 is a Tangut-script character; its Unicode label is only an identifier, not a translation. Created around 1036 under Western Xia's first emperor, Tangut (Xixia) writing served the now-extinct Tangut language, including Buddhist and secular texts. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the Ming dynasty's end. Its glyph resembles Chinese writing, but Tangut is a separate script.

What 𗞴 means

They show the written structure, not the word's meaning.

𘡩 sits above a lower row containing 𘢌 twice and 𘦜. Tangut components are structural pieces scholars use to describe and index characters; they do not by themselves translate 𗞴.

Questions people ask

Why does 𗞴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
