What 𗞳 means
It is the Tangut character for “cypress.”
Tangut dictionary references give it the word for the tree. The script was created under the first Western Xia (Xixia) emperor around 1036 for state and cultural work, then used in official records, private writing, and Buddhist texts.
After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut writing continued in the Yuan and Ming periods but was obsolete by the end of the Ming. It was rediscovered in the late nineteenth century; the change was from a living language’s script to an object of study, not a new meaning for 𗞳.
What does 𗞳 mean when sent?
Treat it as a Tangut cypress reference, not a reaction.
Alone, it may point to the language, the tree, or both; ask the sender for context before assigning a mood, joke, or insult.
A Tangut reader or script enthusiast can read an ordinary word; a casual recipient may only recognize a rare historical script. In a message, that difference makes the sender’s intent hard to infer.
Niche and historical; it reads as a Tangut-language reference rather than familiar chat shorthand.
A lone 𗞳 does not reveal the sender’s mood; read it as a Tangut word or ask for context.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗞳 show as a box?
Sometimes. In 2025, a Tangut input tool documented that some other mobile apps may not render Tangut, even though the text remains Unicode. A Tangut-capable font can display it.
