Tangut character 𗠦

2087/6136

𗠦 is a character in the Tangut script, which was used to write the now-extinct Tangut language. Its scholarly reconstructed reading, *tjị¹, is a sound notation rather than an English translation. Tangut writing served Western Xia government, schools, and Buddhist texts, and continued after the dynasty fell.

What 𗠦 means

As of 2026, its English meaning is unsettled.

Scholars write its reconstructed Tangut reading as *tjị¹. This technical notation records a pronunciation; it does not translate the character.

The Tangut script was created for the Tangut language of Western Xia, a state in northwestern China. Its square forms resemble Chinese writing, but the two scripts use different rules and cannot be read as each other. Officials used Tangut for government; schools taught it, and Buddhist texts were translated and printed in it. The script is traditionally dated to 1036; writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, with the last known example dated to 1502.

Why does 𗠦 show as a box?

Your font needs Tangut coverage to display it.

A blank box means the font cannot draw this character; it is a display problem, not a different character.

Historical and academic; useful interpretation depends on Tangut-language context.

A blank box means the font lacks Tangut coverage.

Why does 𗠦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
