Tangut Character 17850

2129/6136

𗡐 is a character in the Tangut (Xixia) script, created to write the Tangut language; its Unicode label is not a word translation. The script began under the Western Xia court and remained in use during later dynasties before becoming obsolete. Sent alone in a modern chat, 𗡐 identifies a historical glyph but gives no dependable clue to the sender’s tone.

What 𗡐 means

𗡐 is one character in the Tangut script.

Its identity names the writing system, not a translation: its sound and word sense depend on the Tangut word it appears in.

Tangut, also called Xixia, was created to write the Tangut language.

Is 𗡐 Chinese or Tangut?

Tangut has a square, stroke-based style, but it is a separate script.

The Tangut language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family, which also includes Tibetan and Burmese, and was spoken in what is now northwestern China. The script was created under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036. Its square forms resemble Chinese Han characters, but 𗡐 belongs to a distinct script.

Tangut took shape in the same broad region as the Khitan and Jurchen scripts, other historical writing systems. After the Mongol conquest of Western Xia, Tangut writing continued during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Scholars rediscovered the script in the late 19th century; N. A. Nevskij's work in the early 20th century helped decipher it.

What does it mean when someone sends 𗡐?

A lone 𗡐 is a character reference, not a complete message.

The glyph alone does not tell you the sender's tone or the word they intend. Ask what text, source, or use they have in mind.

Historical, scholarly, or typographic; a lone modern message needs sender context.

Do not assign it a Chinese reading by sight.

Why does 𗡐 show as a box?

The active font or text app may not include Tangut glyphs. Open the text in an app with Tangut font coverage; the box is a display fallback, not a different character.
