What 𗡘 means

Its Tangut dictionary gloss is “thousand.”

Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary reconstructs its reading as tụ. In an English approximation, start with t and use the “oo” vowel in “too”; the underdot belongs to the scholarly notation.

Unicode’s automatically generated label comes from the character’s assigned number. It identifies the character but does not translate its Tangut word.

When was the Tangut script created?

It was created around 1036 for Western Xia’s state writing.

Western Xia’s first emperor ordered a writing system for Tangut, a Tibeto-Burman language. It supported state and diplomatic writing, as well as cultural work such as translations of Chinese classics and Buddhist texts.

Tangut characters may look like Chinese characters, but Tangut is a separate script for a different language. After the Mongols conquered Western Xia, the script continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties and was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Scholars rediscovered Tangut writing in the late 19th century and largely deciphered it in the early 20th century.

How do I type 𗡘?

Use Rime with its Xunpin Tangut input scheme.

Xunpin accepts Tangut pronunciation or stroke input. Add its schema and dictionary to Rime, then redeploy; the setup also requires a Tangut-capable font.

A historical, specialist word; give readers an English gloss if they may not know Tangut.

Its square shape may resemble Chinese writing, but this character is Tangut.
