Tangut Ideograph 178EF

2288/6136

What 𗣯 means

The complete character is glossed “charcoal.”

Tangut writing was created for the Tangut language in Western Xia around 1036 and used for government writing and Buddhist translations. It continued after the dynasty fell; a 1502 inscription is a later trace. Tangut developed alongside Chinese writing but remained a separate script. A Tangut dictionary called Sea of Characters analyzed how characters were built.

1

Why does 𗣯 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
