𗣸 is a Tangut character whose dictionary gloss is “death.” Tangut writing belonged to the medieval Western Xia state and carried Buddhist translations. It is a text character, not a Chinese character or an emoji.

What 𗣸 means

The Tangut chart maps 𗣸 to entry 2448 in Li Fanwen’s dictionary; its index gives “death” as the gloss.

Li Yuanhao ordered the script’s creation in 1036 to build a distinct Tangut state and identity. It carried Buddhist translations. A manuscript from Khara-khoto’s ruins, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, also preserves translated nonreligious writing. These dates describe the script and manuscript, not this character’s first use.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗣸 show as a square?

It can: a font without Tangut coverage cannot draw it, so it may appear as a box. A Tangut-capable font can display the same text.
