Tangut character 𗬋

2828/6136

𗬋 is one character in Tangut writing, a script used for the now-extinct Tangut language; this glyph alone has no dependable English gloss. In a message, it most safely points to a Tangut text or reference, but the sender’s intent depends on context. Without a Tangut-capable font, it may appear as a box.

What 𗬋 means

It is a Tangut character, but its gloss depends on context.

𗬋 belongs to Tangut writing, which recorded the Tangut language. The Sea of Writing, a Tangut dictionary, includes this glyph but gives no dependable standalone English gloss. To translate it, identify the word in its surrounding Tangut text with a specialist dictionary.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It belonged to a state-backed writing system.

Tangut writing began around 1036–1037, when the Western Xia court commissioned a script for its Tangut language. It served government and literature, including a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures. A manuscript from Khara-khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, shows Chinese material translated into Tangut.

Tangut books also covered Buddhist, legal, Confucian, military, and literary subjects. The latest known Tangut inscription dates to 1502, centuries after Western Xia’s main period.

Why doesn't a Chinese-looking shape give a Chinese reading?

Tangut and Chinese are separate writing systems.

Chinese and Khitan writing traditions influenced Tangut character design, but that influence does not make 𗬋 a Chinese character or give it a Chinese reading. Chinese source text can help when a Tangut passage is a translation, but this glyph still needs to be read in Tangut.

It reads as archival or specialist writing, not everyday conversational shorthand.

A Chinese-looking shape does not make this a Chinese character or give it a Chinese reading.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗬋 show as a box?

The font or app cannot render this Tangut glyph. A font with Tangut coverage should display it; the box is a rendering fallback, not the character itself.
