Tangut ideograph 17B25

2854/6136

𗬥 means “the sun” in Tangut. The script was made for Western Xia and used in records, translations, and religious writing. In a modern message, it is more likely a quoted character or display test than a standard reaction.

What 𗬥 means

It means “the sun” in Tangut.

The Tangut sun character appears as entry 2532 in Li Fanwen's 2008 Tangut-Chinese dictionary index, glossed “the sun” with the scholarly reading djɨj. The Unicode label “Tangut Ideograph-17B25” is an inventory name, not a translation.

Use the sun reading when the surrounding text is Tangut or a historical quotation. When 𗬥 arrives by itself in a modern chat, treat it as a character sample or deliberate reference, not as a fixed emoji reaction.

Why does 𗬥 look Chinese?

Tangut is a separate script that resembles Chinese characters.

Tangut was a language spoken in northwestern China, classified in the Tibeto-Burman family, a broad group of Asian languages. Its square script was created under the first Western Xia emperor about 1036 and used for records, translations, official documents, private texts, and religious works.

Its makers used a Chinese-character-like visual tradition to build a distinct written identity. Possible influence from the earlier Khitan script concerns the script's design; it does not make 𗬥 a Chinese character.

What happened after Western Xia?

The script outlasted Western Xia, then faded from ordinary use.

Western Xia fell to Mongol armies in 1227. Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming, while later Buddhist material remained important for studying religion and printing. Unicode 16.0 describes the script as obsolete by the end of the Ming.

Archival and specialist; in ordinary chat it reads as a deliberate quotation.

Do not read it as a Chinese character or an emoji reaction.

Why does 𗬥 show as a box?

Your font lacks a Tangut glyph. The character is encoded, but the font still has to draw it.

Did 𗬥 change meaning after Western Xia?

No separate later sense is established in the 2008 dictionary index; the script's later history is a change of use, not a new gloss.
