What 𗱺 means
It means “steed” in Tangut.
Tangut dictionaries from the 12th century, including Sea of Writing and Homophones, record it. Li Fanwen’s dictionary index gives the reconstructed Latin transcription me̱j² (also written mej); a Unicode research table gives [mai]. These are scholarly reconstructions of an extinct language’s sound, not a fixed modern pronunciation.
The Tangut script was created for the Tangut language and supported Western Xia government and religious life. Its state introduction is traditionally dated to 1036. After Western Xia fell in 1227, the script continued in religious texts and manuscripts; the last known example dates to 1502.
What does 𗱺 mean when someone sends it?
Read it as the historical word “steed”; the sender’s reason needs context.
Tangut and Chinese are distinct writing systems for different languages, though their characters can look similar. If someone sends 𗱺 alone, ask what Tangut or Western Xia reference they mean.
Historical and scholarly; this is a Tangut text reference.
𗱺 in a square box means the font lacks Tangut support; Unicode 17.0 does not prescribe one exact shape.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𗱺 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
