What 𗴗 means
It describes movement in both directions.
That is the Tangut gloss for 𗴗: “to come and go.” Scholars write its reconstructed reading in Latin letters as pin. The character belongs to Tangut vocabulary, though Chinese and Khitan writing influenced the Tangut script.
Why was the Tangut script made?
It supported the Western Xia state, religion, and identity.
Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script in 1036 as a state-building project. It supported official writing and Buddhist scriptures, including translations from Chinese and Tibetan.
Chinese writing and the script of the neighboring Khitan people influenced Tangut’s model, but Tangut was a separate script for the Tangut language. Its setting begins in 11th-century Western Xia; it remained in use after the dynasty fell, and the latest known inscription is dated 1502. A structural analysis records 𗴗 as built from 𘣇 on the left and 𘥝 on the right; these components show construction, not meaning.
The audience changed: historical readers used Tangut as a living language; as of 2026, readers mainly encounter it through historical study and digital text.
Specialist and historical: use it in a Tangut-language setting; its Chinese and Khitan influences do not make it Chinese.
Do not treat its Chinese-influenced form as a Chinese word.
