What 𗷾 means
The household-register entry treats the pair as one term.
A Tangut household register—an official record of households—translates 𘅫𗷾 as “department,” “bureau,” or “division.” Those are translations of the two-character term, not a proven one-character gloss for 𗷾.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It gave the Western Xia state its own official writing system. Under imperial direction, Tangut writing was created in 1036–1037 for state records, teaching, and translation. Western Xia was a Tangut-ruled state.
The earliest transmitted example discussed in scholarship is a 1072 official document sent to a military inspector in Guazhou. It shows the script at work in administration.
Tangut forms were distinct from Chinese, though both used stroke-based character construction; the scripts coexisted. Tangut also carried Buddhist translations and inscriptions; a 1502 inscription shows written use long after Western Xia ended.
Specialist historical writing; interpret the administrative translation at the level of the whole Tangut term.
Do not assign the compound’s administrative gloss to 𗷾 alone.
