What 𗺫 means
It names a kind of grass in Tangut. A Tangut dictionary compiled by Li Fanwen gives the gloss “a kind of grass,” without naming a species.
The Tangut script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 to write the Tangut language. It was used for government records and Buddhist translations. The earliest surviving Tangut document is an official record dated 1072. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; a Baoding inscription dated 1502 is later evidence of its use.
How do I type 𗺫?
Use an input method made for Tangut. Specialist layouts for Rime, an input-method system, offer lookup by reconstructed Tangut reading (a scholarly estimate of its sound), by strokes, or through Four Corner codes, which describe the character by its corner shapes.
Why does 𗺫 look like Chinese?
It has Chinese-like shapes but belongs to a separate script. Chinese writing influenced the region’s writing traditions, but Tangut is a distinct script for a different language. Historical comparisons place it alongside Khitan and Jurchen, two other distinct scripts shaped in that environment.
Whether 𗺫 appears depends on the font. Without Tangut coverage, it may display as a missing-character box.
