Text symbol

What 𘄏 means

It is a verb meaning “to meet.”

The gloss comes from a Tangut dictionary entry. Unicode’s name, “Tangut Ideograph-1810F,” is generated from the code point; it identifies the character but does not translate it.

How old is the Tangut script?

The Tangut script began around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor.

It was created to write Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state in what is now northwestern China. After the state fell to Mongol forces, writing continued through the Yuan and Ming periods and had fallen out of use by the end of the Ming dynasty. Tangut literature includes translations of Chinese and Tibetan works. Scholars rediscovered the script in the late 19th century, and work in the early 20th century enabled much of its decipherment. The year dates the script’s creation, not the first attestation of this individual character.

Which parts make up 𘄏?

Unicode describes three components arranged from left to right.

Its structural description lists 𘤳, 𘨷, then 𘠢. These Tangut components describe the written form; they are not translations or substitutes for the whole character.

A historical writing-system character, suited to Tangut texts, dictionary work, or font testing.

The Unicode name is an identifier; the dictionary gloss is “to meet.”

Questions people ask

2

Is 𘄏 a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to Tangut, a distinct script used to write the Tangut language. Some surviving Tangut works are translations from Chinese and Tibetan, but that does not make the script Chinese.

Why does 𘄏 show as a box?

Font coverage is missing: the selected typeface needs Tangut support. The box indicates a display problem, not a different character.
