What 𘇞 means
Tangut dictionaries gloss 𘇞 as “fur.”
It is written in the Tangut script, a system distinct from Chinese writing. By imperial order, the script was created around 1036 for Tangut, the language of the Xixia (Western Xia) kingdom; it served government and schools and was used for Buddhist translation and printing.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued; an inscription dated 1502 is a late surviving example. As of 2026, researchers also study Tangut texts through digital philology, computer-aided study of historical writing.

Questions people ask
1Why is 𘇞 a box?
The font in use lacks a Tangut glyph for it. A Tangut-capable font, such as Noto Serif Tangut, can display it; Unicode support alone does not guarantee that every font can.
