What 𘒰 means
It is a Tangut character glossed as “diligent” or “industrious.”
Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary, a reference work for the script, gives the reconstructed reading ze̱w and uses 勤—the Chinese gloss for diligent work—to explain the meaning. The reading is a scholarly estimate from historical evidence, not a recorded pronunciation.
Tangut was created under the first emperor of Western Xia about 1036 for writing the Tangut language and state records; translators also rendered major Chinese works into it. An official document sent to a military official in Guazhou in 1072 is the earliest surviving Tangut document identified in modern scholarship. That date anchors the surviving record, not this individual graph.
Why does 𘒰 look Chinese?
It has a similar square style, but belongs to another script.
Tangut graphs use a compact square shape familiar from Chinese writing, but Tangut is a separate script for the Tangut language. Its state-backed creation ran alongside an earlier script project by the neighboring Khitan people; that historical parallel does not make 𘒰 a Khitan or Chinese form.
After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut writing continued in official, private, and religious texts during the Yuan and Ming periods, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming period.
Best suited to Tangut history or script study; in ordinary chat, it reads as a deliberate historical reference.
Its square shape can suggest Chinese, but 𘒰 belongs to the Tangut script.
