Tangut character 184CB

5324/6136

𘓋 is a Tangut character from the historic Xixia script used to write the Tangut language. Its Unicode name identifies the encoded character but gives no word or reading. The script served the Western Xia state, and a lone 𘓋 needs its Tangut passage or a dictionary to make its meaning clear.

What 𘓋 means

Its Unicode name is a catalogue label, not a dictionary gloss.

Unicode's name identifies the encoded character; it does not give a Tangut word or pronunciation. Tangut, also known as Xixia, is a script for the Tangut language. Read the glyph in a Tangut passage or dictionary instead of guessing from its shape.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It was created for the Western Xia state. Tangut was commissioned around 1036 by the first Western Xia emperor as part of state-building. It gave the Tangut language a written form. Chinese characters were its main design model, and possible influence from the earlier Khitan scripts has also been proposed.

Tangut writing served official life and carried translations of Buddhist scriptures. An undated manuscript from Khara-Khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves a Tangut translation of a Chinese work about Tang emperor Taizong.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

How do I type 𘓋?

Use an input method that includes Tangut. A Tangut IME (input method editor, or keyboard app) can find characters by stroke or phonetic input; Cangjie and handwriting methods are also available in some tools.

A missing square usually means the app cannot access a Tangut font. Tangut fonts can also draw variant shapes; a different drawing alone does not mean the encoded character has changed.

Historical and specialist; a standalone 𘓋 is best read as a Tangut text sample until its context is known.

The Unicode label is a code-point ID, not a Tangut translation.

What does it mean if someone sends 𘓋?

A lone character gives too little context to infer a message. It may be a text sample or study reference; ask the sender what passage it belongs to.

Is 𘓋 Chinese?

No. It is Tangut writing for the Tangut language. The script resembles Chinese characters and used them as a design model, but it is distinct from Chinese writing.
