Tangut Character 18585

5510/6136

𘖅 is a Tangut character; scholars reconstruct its reading as we¹. A Tangut–Chinese dictionary uses 挨 as a translation clue; in Chinese, it can mean being next to something or enduring it, so context matters. Tangut writing was made for the Western Xia state and drew on Chinese forms.

What 𘖅 means

This Tangut character's reconstructed reading is we¹, not one English word. The notation approximates one syllable, beginning with a brief w sound followed by e; the superscript is part of the scholarly notation.

A Tangut–Chinese dictionary by Li Fanwen pairs 𘖅 with the Chinese character 挨 as a translation clue. In Chinese, 挨 can mean being next to something or enduring it; context decides which sense fits a Tangut passage.

A Tangut rhyme dictionary called Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”), compiled in the 12th century, lists it as a head character at entry 13.231.

Why does 𘖅 look Chinese?

Tangut drew on Chinese forms, but it is a distinct script.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Li Yuanhao as Western Xia built its state and translated Buddhist scriptures, asserting a separate political identity.

The neighboring Khitan people had already created scripts, placing Tangut in a wider medieval East Asian period of script-making. Tangut writing was rediscovered in the late 19th century; researchers study surviving religious, official, private, and literary texts.

What if someone sends 𘖅 alone?

Alone, it cannot establish a specific English meaning.

A Tangut specialist can look it up by its reconstructed reading, while a recipient unfamiliar with the script may not recognize it. Ask where it came from or for the surrounding text before interpreting it.

If it appears as an empty box, the text may still contain the character; the device's font may lack Tangut coverage.

Historical and scholarly; a Tangut passage needs context for a specific translation.

Do not identify it as Chinese 挨: that character is only a dictionary translation clue.
