Tangut Character 𘘈

5641/6136

𘘈 is a Tangut character for a teeth-clamping sound, not an emoji. Western Xia used the script for records, translations, and Buddhist texts; it outlived the state and looks Chinese by design.

Text symbol

What 𘘈 means

It is glossed “sound of clamping the teeth.”

The Unicode label is an identifier, not a Tangut translation.

Why does Tangut look like Chinese?

It writes Tangut in forms modeled on Chinese writing.

Western Xia commissioned it around 1036–1037 for state records and translations; the script also marked a distinct political identity. Its earliest surviving official document dates to 1072.

Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, including on a Buddhist inscription dated 1502. Khitan influence on the design remains debated.

Why does 𘘈 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
