tangut ideograph-186e1

Tangut character 186E1

5858/6136

𘛡 is a Tangut character, used to write the Western Xia language. Tangut was created around 1036 for government records and Buddhist texts, and remained in use through the later Yuan and Ming periods before becoming obsolete. The Wenhai (“Sea of Writing”), a Tangut dictionary, lists the character; its place in the lexicon is not an English gloss. Tangut characters resemble Chinese writing, but Tangut is a separate script.

Why does 𘛡 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
