What ༨ means
It means eight. In Tibetan writing, its position shows whether it counts a quantity, marks a day in a date, or labels a manuscript leaf.
A manuscript from Dunhuang in China, dated 750–1000, uses numerals among its leaf numbers. Tibetan writing took shape in the sixth century under King Songtsen Gampo; the traditional account credits the scholar Thumi Sambhota, sent to study Indian scripts, with creating it. The formal Tibetan style is linked to the Gupta script, an Indian writing system.
Neutral: it is a number, and context tells you what it counts or numbers.

Questions people ask
1Why does ༨ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
